Appreciating heritage in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire, a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county, lies in the South-west of England. Dating back from the Roman times, the rural county was known for its industries in farming, forestry, horticulture, and wool trade. It is the perfect picture of an English countryside where amazing natural places of beauty are found.

One of the best known places in Gloucestershire is Cotswolds which are hills of limestone stretching to almost half of the county. Locally and abroad, it is known for its villages with houses made of mellow stone and stone-tiled roofs. This type of architecture is also shared by barns and churches in Cotswolds. Also in Cotswolds, is the Cotswold Water Park which is a centre of activities ranging from water sports, walking, cycling, angling, and nature appreciation. The Keith Hardings World of Mechanical Music museum where self-playing instruments is also in Cotswold.

The Royal Forest of Dean is home to secret paths and villages. It is one of Britain’s oldest hunting forests.

Among the English counties, the geology of Gloucestershire is the most diverse, providing the county with many different kinds of landscapes, attractions, flora and fauna. The countryside makes up of ninety percent of Gloucestershire. However, its capital Gloucester is a port city well known for its Medieval and Tudor structure and architecture. One of the main tourist attractions of Gloucester is the Gloucester Cathedral where films Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were shot.

The capital city is also famous for its many churches which sprouted the proverb “as sure as God’s in Gloucester.” These churches include St. Mary de Lode, St. Mary de Crypt, St. Michaels church, and St. Nicholas church.

Gloucestershire is a place to go where art, history and culture is appreciated. Many towns house museums and conversation in order to showcase their wonderful heritage of natural beauty, art, and industry. It is a wonder that a very rural countryside such as Gloucestershire places a big premium in their culture and heritage. The county is rich in scenic views, beautiful architecture, and excellent industries.

The Dean Heritage Centre is a forest museum which helps the visitor discover the wonders of geology and landscape. Fossilized plants and animals are on display as well as artifacts of the various industries like fishing, mining, carpentry, and blacksmithing.

The Tudor and Jacobean timber-framed three floor Gloucester Folk Museum features history, crafts, displays showcasing domestic life, trade and industry dating back to the 1500s. Hands-on toys and a puppet theatre is featured in the Toy and Childhood gallery in the museum.

Local crafts and arts are showcased in the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum located in Cheltenham. Its local furniture, jewellery, ceramics are displayed.

At Tewkesbury, nature-loving tourists flock to a nature conservation called the John Moore Museum. If you are craving for all things Victorian, the best place to go is Shambles Museum in Newent. It features Victorian shops, streets, and alleyways.

The county of Gloucestershire is also home to the Prince of Wales. His country home is Highgrove House at Doughton.
