In Love with Inverness-shire

If you’re looking for the perfect vacation somewhere in an idyllic little county where the air is fresh, the view is pleasant, and the local company is warm, then Inverness-shire is the perfect destination for you.

The county of Inverness, also known as Inverness-shire, used to be a general purpose countyof Scotland until it was divided into two areas in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. The Act made Inverness part of the two-tier Highland region, along with Badenoch and Strathspey, Lochaber, and Skye and Lochalsh.

Years later, in 1983, Inverness, Nairn and Lochaber became just one of three constituencies created to cover the Highland region. Then, in 1997, the boundaries of the Highland area were once again redrawn so that three new constituencies were formed, including Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber and Ross, Skye and Inverness West. Today, Inverness is Scotland’s fastest growing city and is referred to as “the city in the Highlands”.

Inverness offers a variety of sights to see and things to do. Scenic mountains, majestic waterfalls, and magical lochs aren’t the only sites that await you. There are castles and museums to explore, delicacies to try out, and activities to engage in that you’ll never have to worry about being bored or feeling lonely.

First on the itinerary is the world-renown Loch Ness, certainly a favorite holiday destinations in the United Kingdom. The place boasts of a spectacular view and a host of flora and fauna. If you stay long enough, you might just catch a glimpse of Nessie, the place’s famed monster. Loch Ness is situated in the Highlands of Scotland and is an easy reach from the bustling city of Inverness itself.

Located at the east of Inverness is Nairn, a resort town known for its golf and fine beaches that you will surely find breathtaking. After a leisurely stroll on the sand, head off to Culloven Battlefield or discover the city’s rich history at Clava Cairns. West of Inverness, meanwhile, lies the long glen of Strathglass. Along the way, you can buy souvenirs at specialist shops at Beauly, a gorgeous town. All over Inverness, fabulous retail shops abound. Shopping hives cater to the needs and wants of locals and tourist alike.

The castles in the Highlands are truly worth a visit. Some were built centuries ago and some are actually just very expansive mansions. Worthy of note is the Inverness castle, an outstanding gothic-style building in red sandstone and dates back from the 1830s. Visit the castle and catch a performance of the Castle Garrison Encounter, which portrays what life must have been for an 18th-century soldier.

There are also shows and cultural centres to check out. Scottish Showtime, a traditional costume performance and reportedly Scotland’s longest running show, is still on for viewing. The Eden Court Theatre and Cinema, home to the music and martial spectacle of the Inverness Tattoo, offers a variety of entertainment programmes to suit everyone’s tastes.
Whatever you’re needs are, you’re sure to be satisfied and delighted with the many attractions and activities you can find and do in Inverness, truly a Britain in Bloom city.
