Sussex

Another historic county located in South East England, Sussex somehow corresponds the era of ancient Kingdom of Sussex. Its borders are Surrey on the north, Kent on the east, English Channel on the south and Hampshire on the west.

The country’s unofficial anthem, Sussex by the Sea, is still associated with the Sussex local identity. It was actually a song written in 1907 by William Wad-Higgs and it became well known throughout Sussex. It is oftentimes sung during historical celebrations and events.

Sussex is also known for the country’s motto ‘We wun’t be druv” which depicts a nature of strong-willed character of the people in the past centuries. Its rich history marked the most significant events in England ‘s history. The Duke of Normandy, William landed with his army in Pevensy in 1066 and defeated the Saxon King Harold.

As a memento of William’s success, a Battle Abbey was built on the exact location where Harold fell. Many exhibitions and museums were established in the nearby areas to account the details of the victorious conquest of William.

Nowadays Sussex is branded for the elegant and genteel resorts in some of the boroughs in Sussex such as Eastbourne, Bexhill, Rottingdean, Worthing and Brighton.

Apart from its elegant resorts, Sussex has a wide range of attractions, sightseeing spots and activities to offer for tourists.

After your first stop in the Battle Abbey, you should not miss the Amberley Working Museum. With an area of six acre, it guarantees fun and exciting activities for the children and family. It features the vintage bus and narrow-gauge railway while have a glimpse of the traditional craftspeople of Sussex like the potter and broom-maker at work.

The stunning Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and it represents a history of nearly 1000 years. It showcases fine collections of paintings, various works of arts highlighting the rosary beads of Mary Queen of Scots. With its 40 acres ground, it is oftentimes held various events throughout the season.

Another luring stopover is the Bentley Wildfowl where you can find one of the largest collection of swans, geese, ducks, cranes and flamingos. The Denmans Garden is a must to see place for plant lovers as it houses around 1500 varietis pf perrennials and shrubs in its 4 acre garden. 

For a scenic view, visit the Bewl Water, the largest lake is situated within the magnificent Wealden countryside. It is an ideal venue for picnics. The historical panorama of Bignor Roman Villa showcases the longest mosaic displayed in great Britain which stretches to 24 meter long with one of the oldest and original floor dating as early as 300AD.

To gratify your childhood fantasy, pass by in the fairy-tale like castle known as Bodiam Castle.

Indulge yourself in Charleston, a unique decorated and stunning walled garden. The rooms were filled with work of arts such as paintings and designs by artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan grant who worked for over half century.

Soak yourself in wild water rides and slides in Butlin Bognor Regis while catch a glimpse of exotic animals from monkeys to crocodiles in Drussilas Park. .
