Margate has been a popular seaside resort for over 250 years thanks to its fine sand beaches. The town’s unique attraction is the subterranean Shell Grotto, a set of passageways discovered in 1835 and plastered with several million shells arranged in symbolic mosaics. Some think it is a 2,000 year old pagan temple. Other say it is just an elaborate hoax, but either way it is an amazing place worth seeing. Some of the better places to stay in town include the Walpole Bay Hotel, which includes a small museum of Victorian life, and one of the better restaurants is the Newbys Wine Bar and Brasserie, featuring some of the best wines in the country and great local seafood.
